Social Media
SOCIAL MEDIA ISN'T JUST FOR ENTERTAINMENT AND POSTING SELFIES?!
Social media is actually a very powerful tool for technical writers. It plays a role in shaping technical writing landscape, whether you are trying to build a professional network or you're looking to gather insight from your audience.
Of the plethora of social media platforms we have today, some of the key ones that can benefit technical writers are Twitter (now called X), Reddit, LinkedIn, YouTube. But that's not all, there are also pages dedicated to technical writers on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok!
How can technical writers leverage social media?
⮞Build your brand
⮞Engage with communities
⮞Promote your work
⮞Follow industry trends
⮞Crowdsource Feedback
⮞Gain insight and inspiration by following influential technical writers
Social media, while super beneficial, is a tool. That means it works if you work. It's important to be consistent and provide a steady stream of content to maintain visibility. If you choose to, it's acceptable to occasionally post personal content, but align your posts with your professional goals as well. You can even throw in some industry news, articles you find interesting, or useful tools (just don't forgot to give credit where credit's due!)
JD Solomon wrote an article on how social media writing IMPROVES technical writing. I think you'll find it as interesting as I did. Check it out here!
Can you imagine a world without social media? 😆
